Summer....Floral borders, Rounders on the Village Green, Pub meals...

The flowers enjoy not being dehydrated and sunburnt. Why do we plant them in Australia!?

At the bottom of the garden there is a lamppost. I keep expecting to see Mr Tumnus, but today there was only a rabbit. it hopped away and didn't want to be photographed. The blackbirds were a bit nervous too. There were about four and twenty of them.

I decided against eating at The Angel Inn at even closer Village, Yarwell. They are humorous, but aggressively non gluten free!! Below is from their menu. Yes, I know it says Nassington not Yarwell- maybe they want to blame the other pub, or they own both.

The tone of a Village Pub is very much set by the personality of the owner/ mine host. If they leave, the entire set of regulars often disappears with them ( presumably the hardened drinkers still lurk under the low beams in a dark corner!) . Gardener No 2, who used to run one of Wansfords Pubs, told me about another small Pub in the village, opposite the one he had.

Couple come in, look around at Ye Olde artefacts on walls and ceiling. Owner says, "It's not a Museum, we're a Pub".

They ask for a Vodka and a pint. Ask if they do food. Owner says.."Well, there's Menus on the Bar aren't there!"

Guy and wife look, order Scampi and Chips for her. Guy asks, could I have a roll, half-cheese and half ham. "No. Can't have that"

"But you have cheese rolls and ham rolls on the Menu!"

"Yes, you can have a Cheese Roll or you can have a Ham Roll".

Customer decides this is enough and the couple get up to go.

Pub Owner, " But you haven't paid for your Vodka and your Pint".

Customer; " Yes, you're right about that- that's the first thing you've got right so far- and we're not going to either.!"......leaves.

(Regular lurking in corner has had trouble containing himself throughout......)

Their main business is from 11 pm when the nearby restaurant closes. (God help the potential customer who is foolish enough to ring the bell at 3 pm to ask if they're open, apparently.)

.....................................................................

I'm glad to say my meal here was very good, and served by a lovely third year History of Art student.

  1. Sort do a reverse hipster approach to ambience!
I'm glad the food was good as the pub opera appeared to be.
